ARTIST BIO

Timothy White

Tim began making ceramics, being attracted to the tactile nature of clay, because he was interested in the poetntial and uncertainty of the finished resulot.  Was introduced to ceramics at secondary school and went on to gain qualifications in this medium.  He began working in the laundry of his parents' home, with a gas filn located in the back garden which proved to be very challenging.

At first he used stoneware clays and has moved on to now only using porcelain and has becmoe intrigued with the process of using lustres on his pieces.  Tim now works out of a 'factory' space in the inner west of Melbourne, an industrial area. which adds to the endeavour of creating beautiful ceramic vessels.

The clay is firstly wheelthrown and turned to shape; bisque fired to set the piece; one of Tim's glazes is then applied (sprayed or dipped); a second firing is done to set the glaze; then a lustre application is added and the piece is fired a third time.  The kiln temperature reaches up to 1300ºC. Tim's endeavour is to create beautiful work that is able to occupy a place in rooms or spaces which are for living or working in.  The aim is to create an ambience that is conducive to being peaceful and relaxing.

Qualifications: Diploma of Art I& Design (Ceramics), Victoria College (Prahran),

Graduate Diploma of Education (Art & Craft), Victoria College (Rusden).
