ARTIST NOTES: Winter Sunset (Rag Rug)
Sunsets are a daily occurrence. Some are spectacular, some are ordinary, some are memorable. How often do we watch a sunset?
When we stop and slow our breathing, take a break from our routine we allow ourselves to notice, to notice the ordinary and see in it the extra- ordinary.
Jasminka learned early in life that nothing should be wasted. Scraps of material make patchwork quilts; old silk ties make skirts; linen nighties make fashionable dresses; waste fabrics are cut and crocheted.
A newly learned weaving and braiding technique opened up new avenues for reusing all those old clothes and fabrics which were not good enough to be donated to op-shops and would have ended up in landfill.
Making something new from the old inspires her.
Found and discarded fabrics are the starting point of an imagining, a dream, which may, after many hours, days, weeks of work, become a reality.
